In the old days Top Teams went offsite to huddle for a day or two, and came back with a “vision”, “Mission statement” and “strategy” that made great sense to them (some of the time), but rarely won the hearts and minds of the next tranche of leaders, or the organisation as a whole.

More and more we see braver senior leaders recognising the value of engaging larger numbers of management and staff in the visioning and strategy formulation process.

These one or two day events are more than events. They are really the culmination of a process of preparation over some months. The leaders need to establish an accurate picture of the status quo for the attendees. This requires doing their homework and being ready to present high quality data in a polished fashion to their colleagues. Otherwise they risk loss of credibility.

Getting through the necessary preparation is not always easy for senior leaders, who are typically being pulled in many other directions by the day-to-day needs of the business.
